London Bridge station today
London Bridge was completely rebuilt in the late 2010s and now has one of the largest station concourses in the country. Thameslink trains cross through it to Blackfriars, St Pancras, Luton Airport Parkway, Bedford and Cambridge in the north, and Gatwick and Brighton in the south. Southern and Southeastern trains also run from here to south London, Surrey, Sussex and Kent.
The station stands at the foot of the Shard, with Borough Market, Guy's Hospital and the riverside walk along Tooley Street all close by.
Is the train or a taxi better?
There are direct Southern trains from Gipsy Hill to London Bridge, so for everyday travel the train is a sensible choice. A car earns its place when you are carrying cases for a Thameslink connection to Luton or Cambridge, visiting Guy's Hospital with someone who needs help, travelling early before the trains start, or coming back late when services are thin.
Route and journey time
London Bridge is about 6 miles from Gipsy Hill. The usual route goes through Dulwich and up Denmark Hill to Camberwell, then along Walworth Road or Camberwell New Road to the Elephant and Castle and on up Borough High Street. The station is inside the Congestion Charge zone, so journeys during charging hours may be affected.
| Journey | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Gipsy Hill to London Bridge, off-peak | 25–35 minutes |
| Gipsy Hill to London Bridge, weekday peak | 35–50 minutes |
Typical estimates. Camberwell and the Elephant and Castle can be slow at rush hour.
Hospital visits to Guy's
Guy's Hospital is right beside the station. If you or a relative have an appointment, a car to the entrance avoids the walk from the station and the crowds on the concourse. Tell us if the passenger uses a walking aid or wheelchair so we can send a suitable vehicle, and let us know when to collect you after the appointment.
Borough Market and a day by the river
Borough Market is a favourite Saturday outing, and it is a short walk from the station. A car there means you can buy as much as you like without carrying it home on the train. The river walk towards Tower Bridge and Southwark Cathedral are also close by.
Trains to Gatwick from London Bridge
Thameslink trains from London Bridge run to Gatwick, and some people choose that route. From Gipsy Hill, though, going north to London Bridge only to come back south adds time. For most people with luggage a direct car to the airport is simpler.
