More than just a railway station
Victoria is one of the busiest transport hubs in London. The railway station has Southern trains to Brighton and the Sussex coast, Gatwick Express trains and Southeastern services to Kent. A few minutes' walk down Buckingham Palace Road is Victoria Coach Station, where National Express and many European coaches start their journeys. When you book, tell us whether you need the railway station or the coach station, as they have different drop-off points.
Train or taxi from Gipsy Hill?
There are regular direct Southern trains from Gipsy Hill to Victoria, and for a commuter with a laptop bag, the train is hard to beat. A taxi makes more sense in other situations: you have heavy cases, you are catching an early coach before the trains get going, you are travelling with someone who finds stairs hard, or several people are sharing the cost. We are happy to be honest about that.
Route and journey time
Victoria is about 6 miles from Gipsy Hill. The usual route goes down Norwood Road (A215) through Tulse Hill and Brixton, then along Brixton Road to Kennington and Vauxhall, crossing the river at Vauxhall Bridge. Victoria is inside the Congestion Charge zone, so charging hours can affect the fare.
| Journey | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Gipsy Hill to Victoria, off-peak | 25–35 minutes |
| Gipsy Hill to Victoria, weekday rush hour | 35–50 minutes |
| Victoria Coach Station to Gipsy Hill, late night | 25–30 minutes |
Typical estimates. Brixton Road and Vauxhall can be slow at peak times.
Early coaches and late arrivals
Coaches to airports and European cities often leave Victoria Coach Station very early, and long-distance coaches can arrive back late at night. We work 24 hours, so a 5am drop-off or a 1am collection is routine. For collections, tell us the coach company and service and we will agree a meeting point nearby.
Victoria for Gatwick?
Some people take a car to Victoria and then the Gatwick Express. From Gipsy Hill that usually means going north only to come back south again. Our direct Gipsy Hill to Gatwick taxi is normally quicker for anyone with luggage.
Around Victoria
Victoria is also a starting point for many visitors to Westminster, Buckingham Palace and the theatres of Victoria Street, such as the Apollo Victoria and the Victoria Palace. If you are going to a show rather than a train, give us the theatre name and we will take you to the nearest safe drop-off point. After the show, agree a pick-up point one or two streets away from the main entrance, where the driver can stop.
Other trips you might need
If you are heading to Kent or the south coast from a different terminus, see our Charing Cross taxi and London Bridge taxi pages. Staying in a central hotel? Our hotel transfer taxi service can take you there directly. We pick up from West Norwood, Crystal Palace and all around SE19.
