Crossing London to reach Essex
Stansted is the furthest of the main London airports from Gipsy Hill, about 45 miles away on the Essex and Hertfordshire border. It is the main base for Ryanair and is also used by Jet2 and other airlines, so plenty of local residents end up flying from there for city breaks and holidays even though it feels a long way off.
By train you would need to get into central London, cross to Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale and take the Stansted Express. With early departures, that can mean setting off in the middle of the night on night buses. A booked car takes the whole journey in one go.
How the driver gets there
The key decision is where to cross the Thames. Most Stansted runs from SE19 go north-east through Dulwich, Lewisham or Greenwich to the Blackwall Tunnel or the newer Silvertown Tunnel, both of which now charge a toll. After the river the route follows the A12 and A406 North Circular to the M11, which leads to Junction 8 and the airport. At quiet times a central route through the City to the A10 and M11 can be just as fast.
| Journey | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Gipsy Hill to Stansted, overnight | 70–85 minutes |
| Gipsy Hill to Stansted, weekday daytime | 90–120 minutes |
| Stansted to Gipsy Hill, evening arrivals | 80–100 minutes |
Typical estimates only. Tunnel closures and M11 roadworks can add time, so we plan in a margin on every Stansted booking.
Planning your pick-up time
Because of the distance, we suggest leaving Gipsy Hill at least four hours before a short-haul departure during the day, or three and a half hours for a very early flight when the roads are clear. Stansted has one terminal building, which makes the drop-off simple once you arrive. There is a charge for dropping off in the forecourt area, so ask us how that works in your quote.
Coming home from Stansted
For collections, the flight number matters more than ever because a delay into Stansted late at night can easily push past midnight. The driver tracks your flight, and with meet and greet will wait inside the terminal with your name. If you are coming back tired after a week away, not having to find a train into London is worth a lot.
Space for everyone on a long ride
On a journey that can take well over an hour, comfort matters. Groups of friends heading off on a stag, hen or sports trip often book our 7 seater taxi so everyone travels together. Couples with lots of luggage may prefer an estate car. If you are staying in a hotel before your flight, our hotel transfer taxi service can take you there instead.
Not sure Stansted is the right choice? Compare it with taxis to Luton Airport, which is a similar distance, or with the much shorter London City Airport taxi journey. Pick-ups are available from West Norwood and the rest of our areas we cover.
